2007 Scouting For Food

WHAT IS SCOUTING FOR FOOD?

Scouting for food is the largest single food drive in the Bay Area, with twelve councils participating locally. The Boy Scouts call this their "Good Turn Day" when thousands of area Scouts turn out for a single event to help others in need.

Right before the holidays, Scouts distribute special collection bags to porches and front steps of residences all around the Bay Area, Northern California and throughout the United States. The bags are printed with instructions asking the residents to place canned goods and nonperishable food items in the bag and put it out on their porch the following Saturday. On the following Saturday, Scouts return to collect the filled bags and take them to the designated collection sites where the food is stored, boxed and transported to local food banks and distributed to people in need - sick and home-bound elders, families in crisis, the homeless, jobless adults, and others who need food.

In Vacaville this year, the bags will be distributed door to door between November 10 and November 16th and will be picked up November 17th to allow the food banks time to process and deliver the food. Everything collected locally will go directly to the local Vacaville food banks and this is their single largest source of food at this time of year.

In 1988 the first nationwide "Scouting For Food" collection was held. In that first year more than one million Scouts collected an estimated 65 million items of non-perishable food items and Scouting for Food has become an annual nationwide program.
